UIL - Greener Pastures: Veteran Woodlands cross county coach exits with 15th state title

There is little doubt where the best long distance runners in the state reside.

The Woodlands boys and girls cross country teams both captured first place at the University Interscholastic League State Meet Saturday at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock.

The state title is the third straight for The Woodlands boys and the second overall for the Lady Highlanders.

Saturday marked the second time that both The Woodlands boys and girls teams won a state championship in the same year. The other year was 1989, when the girls won their only other title.

Senior Reed Connor and junior Sarah Andrews also captured individual titles for The Woodlands, repeating the results of the last two weeks when the teams swept the District 14-5A and Region II-5A titles.

The Woodlands won two team titles and two individual titles in the same season for the first time in school history.

The Woodlands boys finished with 56 points, while Seven Lakes was a distant second with 87 points.

The win was especially satisfying for boys coach Dan Green, who coached his last UIL cross country meet. He announced his retirement from coaching following the track and field season in the spring.
