The Woodlands boys, Keller girls claim 6A crowns

The Woodlands continued its historic mastery of the UIL State Championships, winning the boys team title for the 19th time in 38 years on Saturday at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock. RESULTS

William Hunsdale, Gavin Hoffpauir and Noah Wells went 5-7-9 on the way to a team score of 51 and coach Juris Green’s fourth title in eight years. (His father Dan Green won 15 titles in 30 years). Southlake Carroll was second 123 points, one point better than Flower Mound. STATE MEET BOYS HISTORY

The boys race up front was loaded as five runners broke 15 minutes. Sam Worley of Comal Canyon ran 14:40.9 and beat sophomore sensation Alex Maier of Flower Mound (14:43.4), El Paso Eastwood’s Daniel Bernal (14:49.8), Southlake Carroll’s Reed Brown (14:56.7) and Hunsdale (14:57.7).

Julia Heymach from Lamar led seven girls under 18 minutes and won her second consecutive state cross country title in 17:12.8. Ashton Endsley of Abilene was second in 17:16.2. Third-place finisher Abbey Santoro led Keller to a dominant team victory as the Indians scored 44 points and beat Southlake Carroll (84) and The Woodlands (127).

Freshman sensation London Culbreath of McKinney North ran the fastest time of the day for girls, 17:06.8, and won the Class 5A race by 44 seconds. The Randall girls won a close team battle with Prosper, 68-72. Senior Butare Rugenerwa from Amarillo ran 15:08.1 to win the boys race as Lucas Lovejoy sped away to the team title with 59 points.

Isaac Vargas of Levelland won the Class 4A boys race by 28 seconds in 15:34.2. San Elizario put four in the top 18 and five in the top 26 on the way to the team championship with 51 points. Bandera won the girls title with 93 points. Freshman Emily Garcia won the 3,200-meter girls race in 11:28.8.

The Luling boys put four in the top 20 of the Class 3A race and took the team title with 50 points. Senior Kyle Doty from Bruceville-Eddy ran 15:24.1 and won the race by 10 seconds. The five scorers on the East Bernard girls team were separated by a mere 16 seconds and won the girls team title with 58 points. Senior Chandra Westbrook of runner-up Eustace won the girls race in 11:24.4 (3,200 meters).

Sundown dominated the top of the podium in the Class 2A championships, sweeping the team titles and collecting both individual crowns. Sophomore Steven Quintanilla ran 16:13.9 to win the boys race, while Andrea Sanchez clocked 11:24.7 for 3,200 meters.

In Class 1A, the little town of Spur produced the two individual champions. Juniors Dustin Dominey (16:06.2) and Izabelle Smith (11:49.8 for 3,200 meters) both won handily. Saltillo scored 59 points to win the boys team title and Hartley edged Nazareth for the girls title (104 to 107).
